The John Batchelor Show

Friday 12 October 2012

Air Date:
October 12, 2012

Photo, above: manic laughter, compulsive interrupting, pointing a finger at Mr Ryan, at Ms Raditz, at the audience; all suggest an opera with a purpose.  The vice-president's private complaint has been that, ever since his teeth were recapped, they didn't fit correctly. "George Washington teeth," an observer said.

JOHN BATCHELOR SHOW

Friday 905P Eastern Time: .  Jim McTague, Barron;s Washington, in re:  – to me, the superrich are multibillionaires; today, the White House backtracked from "millionaires" to $250,000-aire.  In Washington, facts aren't hewn to too closely – I understand, as befits an emperor.  [Recitation of unemployment figures in Scranton, PA; Naples, FL; Yuma, AZ.] Politicians and accountants are given to the rounding error.  The Bush-Obama Tax Cuts:  maybe keep them for five or six years?  Requires the lame-duck Congress to approve . . .  Last night I dreamt that I say a debate between Soupy Sales and ________. Biden has all the facial expressions down.  "Slightly more for millionaires" – 42%, plus state and city taxes on top. Hillary Clinton paid 13% taxes when she was running.

Explaining Biden's Tax Talk Vice President Joe Biden talked so much about raising taxes on millionaires Thursday night that it sounded at times as though he was hinting at a new Yes, Thanks.  And the White House now is claiming in the wake of Biden’s comments that it always favored permanent extension of the Bush cuts for the middle class, which is not accurate.

Friday 920P Eastern Time:  .John Fund, American Spectator, in re: "With regard to t he assault on the Catholic Church . . .  none has to refer to or pay for contraception in any insurance policy they provide."  An alternate conception of reality.  Sibelius, et al., seem to think that if they say something often enough it becomes true.  Catholic Church is suing HHS on the administration's plan.  The bishops are polite and careful; but if this preposterous imagination continues to be put forth by this Administration, you may hear from pulpits a denunciation of this policy and of those who promulgate it.   Biden and Bill Daley opposed this initially, was overruled by Mme Valerie Jarrett. Bill Daley quit.  The Obama re-elect is shepherded by Axelrod; suggests that a second term would be a nightmare of contentions, no compromise.  The [problems piling up for us in January] are [intense]. "This is the only Administration I've ever been in where it's 100% politics 100% of the time."

Friday 935P Eastern Time: . Eli Lake, Newsweek, Daily Beast, in re: video camera evidence of the Benghazi attack: what do we know now about the timeline, and when did State know? Drone has camera with "Gorgon stare" – but the drone arrived toward the end of the abduction and fight.  Charlene Lamb.  By 17 Sept, a day after Susan Rice said it was all about a video trailer and spontaneous, four give a briefing to  the relevant State officials; State quit saying a protest got out of hand – but  three days later Pres Obama keeps the line on Univision. Why did State have the info and not tell the White House?

Friday 950P Eastern Time:  . Henry Miller, Hoover, in re:  why does Joe Biden act strangely in public? Is there a physical explanation? Biden had two cerebral aneurysms (a ballooning out of an artery; balloon causes pressure on the brain and causes many symptoms) operated on: one on left and one on right were surgically repaired.  Last month he told a crowd in West Virginia that Romney would "put y'all back in chains" to an African-American audience; confused Virginia with North Carolina. In 1987, he plagiarized – outright stole - a Neil Kinnock speech and even revised his own family history to conform to Kinnock's speech, claiming his own family had been miners.   Said he'd been the only one in his law school class to have a full scholarship and was graduated as best student; not true, and he was graduated 76th out of 82; all bizarre statements. Inappropriate affect, incl weird laughter in speaking about national  policy; no empathy with Americans killed in Benghazi; grinning, mumbling to himself; hand signals, rolling his eyes back to the lights. Inability to control himself.

Friday 1005P (705P Pacific Time):  .Larry Johnson, No Quarter, in re: "The lies within lies multiply. Now the White House is saying in perfectly Clintonesque style that when Biden said that “we” didn’t know about the security request from Benghazi ,he just mean himself and the president. This is pathetic. Does the State Department not report to the president? Was the national security advisor unaware of what was going on in Libya? An administration that must resort so frequently to pleas of incompetence is not one to be entrusted with national security."

Ansar al Shariah: Salafists with ties to al Qaeda; Sunni radicals. Carried out the actual murder of Amb Chris Stevens.  State left that mission woefully unprepared and unprotected. Then when it was too late, the Administration decided to make the false claim that it was all spontaneous and due to a video.    Eric Nordstrom, who left the embassy in June, had identified 200 incidents in the preceding year – any 20 of which would have been enough to bring in serious protection . . .  all under the control of Pat Kennedy (not Charlene Lamb):  Republicans endeavored to conceal the photo of the city Charlene Lamb introduced in order to protect a US operations ctr; Pat Kennedy made Lamb present it in order to fore the committee to go into secret session.  Why were the embassy and the consulate so badly protected – because of the CIA operation that was training the very Islamist extremists we're fighting in Iraq? On one hand, we kill Islamist extremists in Iraq, and on the other we train and fund and send into battle the same persons, the pirates we used to kill Qaddafi: there are 1,000 Libyan al Ansar fighters in Syria right now,  having been sent there by the CIA to aid the "Free Syrian Army" – itself an invention funded by the US, the Saudis, and Qatar, and run by Turkish intelligence.

Friday 1020P (720P Pacific Time):  . Fouad Ajami, in re:  Turkey and Erdogan challenge the Arab world at the Syrian border. Only 28% of the Turkish public support Erdogan's policies. Now a half-million Turkish troops on the Syrian border.  Used to be: Aleppo was a red line - people used to leave Antakya and go to Aleppo for lunch; now Assad has bombed Aleppo and no one has reacted. Antakya (Antioch of the Crusades) has many Alawis living in it; it's still a Turkish city.  Refugees flooding in, changing everything.  A slice of Turkey in the south that the Turks just ripped out of Syria when the French were the mandatory power. Orontes River. Shared territory; now choices have to be made; it might come to war, which no one wants.

Friday 1035P (735P Pacific Time):  . Dan Henninger, WSJ, in re: the coarsening of the debate: Biden in KY, and calling Romney “liar” after the Denver debate.

Friday 1050P (750P Pacific Time):  . Samuel Tadros, Hudson, in re:  Coptic Christians of Egyot and their exodus from Egypt.

Friday 1105P (805P Pacific Time): . Robert Zimmerman, in re: religion vs science; the Hardewick Man from 9,500 years ago vs Native Americans of Northwest; also global warming vs metrics since 1998

Friday 1120P (820P Pacific Time): . Bill McGurn, WSJ, in re: the Tom Lehrer Big Bird attacks by OFA, why?

Friday 1135P (835P Pacific Time): . Richard Epstein, Hoover, in re:  the new Texas affirmative action case at the Supreme Court.
